Wikipedia

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that any person with an internet connection can access and maintain. In this lies the fatal flaw of Wikipedia. If anyone can edit it, can it be trusted?

In certain occasions it has been shown that Wikipedia can act as a reliable source (Potash)(Cohen). During the Virginia Tech Shootings, many people flocked to the Wikipedia pages where coverage of the event was more detailed and accurate than the new reports (Cohen). In a side by side comparison it has been shown that Wikipedia is about as accurate as Encyclopedia Brittanica, an undisputed Encyclopedia that serves as a source of knowledge for many (Potash).

Other times, because of the reliance on individual users, Wikipedia pages can be altered by bias or skewed by internet vandals (Hafner)(Potash). This creates entries that contain nothing except lies and opinions without any real facts.

Wikipedia is a Postmodern Encyclopedia, it revolves around the subjectivity of individuals to combine to make something that is almost objective. The problem comes from this subjectivity, however, because even though some entries can be trusted, we have no way of knowing the true articles from the false. It is a Shrodinger's cat of truth and nobody can know for sure whether it is truly the truth or a falsity. This precarious position with regards of truth causes its destruction as no one can know for certain the truth.
